Experience the charm of New Bern with this exquisite giclée print of the Hay House at Tryon Palace, featuring Janet Francoeur’s original award-winning watercolor. The print image measures 12 x 15 inches, beautifully capturing the essence of this historic home.
Built in the early 19th century, the Robert Hay House is modest compared to other residences in the Palace complex. Robert Hay, a Scottish immigrant and wagon maker, purchased this Federal-style wood-frame townhouse in 1816, the same year he married Nancy Carney. He lived there until his passing in 1850 at the age of 96. Interestingly, local tax records noted the house as “unfinished” when Hay acquired it for $1,000.
Today, the Hay House serves as a “living history” museum, offering visitors an immersive experience of life in 1835. Engage with character interpreters portraying Hay household members and neighbors, and enjoy hands-on experiences with reproduction furnishings in this interactive “Please Touch” museum.
