Road Trips in May – Savannah, Charleston, Norfolk

Hillsborough Sculpture Show

Norfolk, Savannah, and Charleston

On a whim I entered two national juried shows this spring, one in Norfolk during Virginia Garden Week and the other Hilton Head Art League Biennale and got into both. Both pieces were too big to ship so that meant I had to make trips to Norfolk and Hilton Head, oh darn!

The trip to HH came first. The Island is not my favorite but I love Bluffton and Savannah.

For this show there were 700 entries from across the country and 100 pieces were chosen.

The trip consisted mostly of taking photos, visiting galleries, and walking. Dining was not high on the list because it was Mother’s Day and everything was packed.

Instead of trying to stay in the historic district, I stayed in Mount Pleasant at the Residence Inn, It was very nice, clean, nice pool, quiet, it will be my go to hotel from now on.

I’ve been working on my garden so quite a few stops looking for interesting plants were made

Next I headed off to Norfolk.

With no particular plan in mind, my friend Irene and I visited the Hermitage Museum and Garden. This was formerly home to the Sloane family, is an early 20th century Arts-and-Crafts estate located on the shore of the Lafayette River in Norfolk, Virginia.

Featuring a nationally recognized art collection spanning 5,000 years, the Hermitage is home to the arts. Contemporary exhibition galleries, a Visual Arts Studio, working artist studios, and 12 acres of gardens and grounds offer art and culture to the community, as envisioned by the Sloanes.

The Museum happened to be closed but the garden was open. It’s a beautiful setting and the garden well worth a visit. And free, btw.
